Romanian premieres Orchestral concerts Festivals

A vibraphone soloist since 2005, Alexandru Anastasiu took the vibraphone out of the chamber and jazz settings and placed it at the front of the stage — as a concerto instrument with orchestra, with a repertoire and an audience he built, in Romania, largely himself.

His training is fully classical: a BA (2000) and an MA in Music Performance (2002) at the National University of Music Bucharest (UNMB), in the class of Prof. Dr. Alexandru Matei, followed by summer studies at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg (2006, the classes of Peter Sadlo and Bogdan Băcanu). From 2007 he pursued doctoral work at UNMB under Prof. Dinu Ciocan, with the thesis "The Vibraphone and the Music Written for It from the Early 20th Century to the Present". In 2020 he added a second master's degree, in conducting stylistics, in the class of Maestro Tiberiu Soare.

He has given the Romanian premieres of works by Emmanuel Séjourné (2007, the Romanian premiere of the Concerto for Vibraphone, with the Romanian Radio Chamber Orchestra), Ney Rosauro (2011, the Vibraphone Concertos tour), Nathan Daughtrey (2014), and Joe Porter (2015–2016, multiple premieres), alongside his own compositions. He has played six editions of the George Enescu Festival (1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011) and, across his career, with the Romanian National Radio Orchestra (2003–2024), the Romanian Radio Chamber Orchestra, and the philharmonics of Sibiu, Cluj, Pitești, Ploiești, Bacău, Oradea, Craiova, Banatul Timișoara, and Muntenia Târgoviște.

Since 2013 he plays his signature Mike Balter mallets (United States), a model carried into the Zildjian roster after the 2018 acquisition: "For me the best mallets for vibraphone are Mike Balter's." In 2025 he marked twenty years as a soloist with an anniversary programme that included the premiere of his double concerto The algoRhythm at Filarmonica Ploiești, conducted by Tiberiu Soare.
